Figure Drawing: Geometry for Faces'Drawing a face using an oval' types of tutorials are a dime a dozen all over the internet. With good reason. Because they work! Here's another one.
Step 1We start by marking out the dimensions of the face.
Because we're using pencils and not inking, remember to DRAW LIGHTLY!! Step 2We join the dashes to make our oval.
Step 3Add rough shapes of where the eyes, nose and mouth are.
Here's an interesting tit-bit. The look of a face is mostly dependent on the placement of these three features: The eyes, nose and mouth. Their shapes are secondary to WHERE they actually are. In case you don't get it yet; it's where you place them that counts. So make sure you have them in the right place before attempting to add the details. Step 4Now that we have a guideline, we go ahead and LIGHTLY sketch out the other features.
Notice that I tightened the lines of the jaw, so it's less ovally now. Step 5I switch to my 0.5 and 0.9 mechanical pencils, and actually start drawing.
Step 6A little levels adjustment cleans the picture and darkens the lines admirably
And that's it.
To be honest, I did this on a bed, so it's a little skewed. Another tip while drawing, do it on a table. I'm serious about this one. It makes a lot of difference! Now go start drawing, you!
